Manipulation

Spinal adjustments are among the most powerful methods of chiropractic treatment. The adjustment is performed to realign spinal vertebrae and relieve nerve pressure. The spinal nerves branch off from the spinal cord and exit between the vertebrae of the spine. When vertebrae be come misaligned they can cause nerve irritation or pinched nerves. Pain may be local or radiate to the extremities. The most common condition of pinched nerve is sciatica (pain radiating down the leg). Nerve irritation not only can cause pain, but may effect a variety of functions in the body. Nerves are the pathway for all function. Gentle but effective adjustments help at first to relieve pain, and then to restore normal function and restore health.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy has been extremely effective in relieving pain in muscles and improve joint function with immediate results. It was developed by an American physician and medical researcher Dr. Janet Travel!, MD. In the 1940's.

A Trigger point is an area of tenderness and tension which develops in the muscle. This often feels like a knot in the muscle. Trigger points are usually found near the sight where misalignments of the spine,"subluxations" occur.

Trigger points prevent normal movement of the muscle and of the joint, resulting in misalignment, inflammation, and in some cases, pressure on the spinal nerve as it travels between the vertebrae in front of the joint. To relieve this trigger point (knot) in the muscle, pressure is applied directly to the muscle for a short time. Stimulating the muscle in this way causes the muscle to relax, restoring normal movement, decreases local pain, and increases circulation to the muscle to remove toxins.

Massage Therapy

Our massage therapist is available according to your schedule.  Our therapist is licensed in medical massage and offers a wide variety of techniques to meet your specific needs.

Spinal Decompression in Myrtle Beach

This type of therapy involves stretching the spine to relieve back pain caused by bulging, degenerating or herniated discs. A traction table is the tool used to perform spinal decompression. Regular treatments promote proper spinal alignment and may help you avoid surgery.

Exercise Rehab

General exercise is very important to maintain health. With recurrent, chronic, or more severe cases, rehabilitation may be necessary. Specific exercises may be prescribed to increase range of motion, and strengthen muscles once pain is reduced and motion is returned. For recurrent or chronic low back conditions it is important to strengthen core muscles to reduce the risk of future disc problems. Neck problems often cause stiffness and reduced range of motion leading to arthritis if not addressed early enough. Shoulder problems are very common. Reducing pain and restoring range of motion to the shoulder is the first and most important factor, followed by strengthening. Exercises if not performed correctly can cause more damage than good. At Surfside Chiropractic time is taken to instruct patients in range of motion and strengthening exercises right in the office, until the patient is proficient enough to do them at home.

Physiotherapy Modalities

Therapeutic modalities may be utilized for relieving pain and restoring normal function. These may include the following:

Electrical muscle stimulation:Reduces spasm and tension, decreases inflammation, and reduces pain. May also be used in muscle re-education.

lntersegmental traction: Increases circulation, relaxes muscles, tractions the spinal column thereby increasing joint mobility, and relieves disc pressure.

Ice and heat therapy:Controls inflammation, pain, and tension.
